About the Role
On Call COO is an advisory firm that provides high-level operational leadership to growth-stage businesses. We’re building a bench of exceptional fractional COOs to support our expanding client base across industries such as e-commerce, professional services, education, health and wellness, hospitality and more.
We are seeking experienced fractional COOs who bring strategic leadership, operational rigor, and a track record of scaling companies. This is an evergreen contractor role with flexible client assignments based on availability and fit.
Minimum Experience Requirement (Non-Negotiable)
To be considered, candidates must have held the title of Chief Operating Officer OR Chief Strategy Officer for at least 3 years in a prior organization (not as a consultant, as an internal executive).
Key Responsibilities
As a Fractional COO within our firm, you’ll be assigned to one or more client accounts, acting as the operational leader responsible for driving clarity, structure, and execution. Responsibilities may include and are not limited to:
Strategic Leadership & Scaling
Develop and operationalize company vision, OKRs, and growth strategies.
Translate CEO or founder goals into actionable roadmaps.
Lead strategic planning, annual planning, and quarterly priorities.
Operational Excellence
Audit existing operations and implement systems, processes, and SOPs.
Improve efficiency across people, platforms, and workflows.
Build operational dashboards, performance metrics, and framework for accountability.
Team Leadership & Management
Build or restructure org charts to support scale.
Oversee leadership teams and departmental managers as needed.
Implement leadership development, performance management, and accountability systems.
Business Optimization
Streamline finance, Sales, HR, marketing operations, fulfillment, and client services.
Improve profitability through cost management and strategic decision-making.
Lead special initiatives or change management efforts.
Execution & Oversight
Guide project managers, operations managers, and BOMs.
Hold teams accountable to deadlines, KPIs, and standards.
Provide C-suite reporting and executive-level communication.
Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following criteria to be eligible:
Required:
Minimum of 3 years in a full-time role as a Chief Operating Officer or Chief Strategy Officer.
Proven experience scaling a company, department, or division.
Strong leadership background working directly with CEOs/founders.
Experience managing cross-functional teams and/or senior leaders.
Demonstrated ability to build and optimize operational infrastructure.
Excellent communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred:
Experience in business turnaround, start-up or growth-stage businesses.
Prior consulting or fractional executive work is a plus (but not required).
What This Role Looks Like
Independent contractor (1099) status
Flexible hours depending on client assignments
Engagements range from weekly retainers to intensive projects
Collaboration with our internal operations managers, BOMs, and analyst teams
Remote work with occasional travel opportunities depending on client needs
